Creating a secure password

Print

Your eLink Internet banking Access Code needs to be between 6 and 20 characters (but must include at least 2 numeric). Regardless of what you are establishing an Access Code or password for, it's important you keep several things in mind to ensure your Access Code or password is as safe and secure as possible.

Tips to create a secure, easy to remember Access Code/password
  • You may like to come up with a sentence that will be easy for you to remember. This will be the basis of your new strong password - for example "The sky is blue and the grass is green".
  • Convert your sentence to a password by taking the first letter of each word of the sentence to create a nonsensical word. Based on the above sentence example, you would end up with "tsibatgig".
  • Add complexity by mixing uppercase and lowercase letters as well as substituting some of the letters with characters and numbers that look similar - for example "T$1batG!g".
  Password strategies to avoid
  • Do not use sequences or repeated characters, for instance "12345678," "222222," "abcdefg" or adjacent letters on your keyboard.
  • Do not use your login name, any part of your name, birth date, phone number, or similar information for your loved ones or pets.
  • Avoid dictionary words in any language including words spelled backwards, common misspellings, and substitutions.
  • Do not use the same password for everything. If one password is compromised it will be compromised for everything.
